Is that Mold?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

One of the largest factors in mold survival 101 is the amount of moisture that is located within the air. Mold will grow anywhere on any substance where dampness is present.  Most people do not realize as well as causing mold, excess moisture can also contaminate the air as well. Mold that is located within your home is a source of pollution all in itself.  Mold particles can release toxic particles that will emanate and infiltrate the air that you are breathing in. Also, not to mention the fact that dampness itself can cause water vapor, which eventually will turn into microbial growth leading to more mold and now we are caught in a cycle. Making sure the moisture levels are maintained can affect the cleanliness of the air.

But there are many other things you can do to reduce the growth of mold and keep the air around you clean. Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann

Ventilation

Quick, easy and most importantly…  free! Making sure that you keep your windows open whenever it is possible will ensure a healthy dose of air circulation.

Extractor Fans

Gas stoves and cooking pollutants in the kitchen as well as aerosol sprays and fragranced products in the bathroom are responsible for these rooms being high-toxin areas, so use extractor fans to ensure the air is regularly cleared. If you do not have a fan ventilating in a bathroom where showers are located, SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann would recommend installing one.  Bathrooms are a breeding ground for mold, especially one without a vent.

Clean

Making sure all surfaces are regularly cleaned and dusted especially bathroom and kitchens are a must. Vacuuming and dusting are major when trying to prevent mold and particles from getting into your air.

Dehumidifiers

These are a must! Every indoor space should have one of these as it is the perfect weapon against excess moisture, which could lead to black ceilings, paint, and wallpaper peeling off.  Not to mention the fact that it will help protect your personal belongings and keep your food fresher for longer.

Plants

Plants one might ask? Other than just looking pretty, indoor plants, especially leafy greens, are key in helping to eliminate airborne pollutants. Thus in turn, purifying the air. So next time your out and about maybe think of purchasing a few leafy green plants to put throughout your home!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO CLEAN?

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

With a busy schedule to keep, how often do you really need to clean your home? By taking care of these 6 little- thought-of-places, you can keep your home at its best and healthiest.

If you want to keep your home healthy and beautiful, but don't have the schedule for regular deep cleans, then here are the six main places you need to focus on to eliminate sneaky bacteria, and keep your place shining at a glance.

1. MICROWAVE

Contrary to popular opinion, Microwaving your food does not burn away bacteria enough to counterbalance the spray of food from crackling bacon or explosive chili, leaving your microwave as the last kitchen appliance to clean is setting you up for food poisoning.

2. BATHTUB.

A bathtub is even dirtier than your toilet. Bacteria lingering in your bathtub can cause more than a surprise of the flu. So be sure to give it a once over with heavy soap one a week.

3. FLOOR.

The eye is instantly drawn to the floor when entering the room, so even if the rest of your home is pristine, a dirty floor will equate to a dirty home. When you see accumulation of pet hair and crumbs it's time to give it a once over with a vacuum, and mop up dirt as you see it on your hardwood.

4. TABLE TOPS AND PICTURES.

Forgetting to brush off your ceiling fan once in a while can aggravate respiratory issues such as asthma, and bacteria naturally gathers on coffee tables and bedside stands. Take a rag with disinfectant and go over them a few times a week.

5. COMPUTER.

You might run your virus scanner every week but its not the insides of this home essential you need to worry about, computer keyboards are 5 times dirtier than your toilet seat. A few times a week just over over keyboard and mouse with disinfecting spray.

6. KITCHEN COUNTERS.

We leave dishes and food on them, use them as impromptu seats, and our pets even have free range of our counter tops when not looking. Bleach them down twice a week.

Ways to Reduce Chimney & Fireplace Pollution

10/3/2019 (Permalink)

Untreated, Seasoned Firewood Ways to Reduce Chimney & Fireplace Pollution

You have the power to reduce the amount of pollution created by your fireplace and chimney.

When you burn wood inefficiently, it produces higher levels of harmful gases and particulates that are released into the atmosphere. Increasing the efficiency of your fireplace and using the right fuel can decrease the environmental impact of using your fireplace. You can reduce the environmental impact of using your fireplace by taking a few steps to make your fireplace more eco-friendly.

7 Ways to Reduce Fireplace Pollution

  • Only Burn Untreated, Seasoned Firewood
  •  Open the Damper When the Fireplace is in Use
  • Don’t Tolerate a Smoky Fire
  • Install a New Chimney Liner
  • Invest in a Chimney Cap or Chase Cover
  • Ensure Fireplace & Chimney Additions Are Properly Installed
  • Have the Chimney Professionally Cleaned & Inspected Annually

Whenever you use your fireplace, deposits of soot or creosote buildup along the walls. Creosote buildup is known for being dangerous because it is highly combustible. It also dampens the chimney’s performance. Just a ½ inch of buildup can restrict airflow in the chimney from 17% to 30% according to the Chimney Safety Institute of America. That can have a big impact on the fire’s ability to burn efficiently. Having your chimney cleaned at least once a year can keep your fireplace running efficiently.

By using the right fuel and investing in chimney maintenance, you can significantly reduce the impact your fireplace has on the environment. You will benefit from a fireplace that burns longer and hotter.

How Does the MA DEP fit into jobs with SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann?

12/4/2018 (Permalink)

When asbestos may be involved, know the proper procedures!

Advice from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection:  "If asbestos containing material is in good condition, the best thing you can do is leave it alone."

Unfortunately, IICRC standards says removal of some amount of building materials in necessary in a high percentage of our jobs due to contamination.  What does that mean?  If we are removing any amount of building materials from your home, the said building material needs to be tested for asbestos levels, without failbefore the materials are removed from your home.  What does this mean to you>  It means we are "on hold" with your project temporarily.  We contact a valuable asset, an Industrial Hygienist, who will contact you our customer, to make arrangements to come to your home to perform asbestos testing.  The Industrial Hygienist will take samples of the material we are looking to remove, and the samples are sent to a lab for asbestos testing.  We are usually notified within 2-3 days with the results...whether any of the building materials contain asbestos or not.  If there is asbestos in the materials, we need bring in an outside asbestos abatement company to provide an estimate for you (and your insurance company)and ultimately perform the asbestos abatement.

The reasons fo the multi steps is simple. #1) if we skip this step, the fine from the MA DEP reaches into the thousands of dollars.  #2)What does this mean to you and your home?  It goes back to the MASS. DEP advice..."If asbestos containing material is in good condition, the best thing to do is leave it alone."  If the material needs to be removed from your home, it is no longer in good condition due to your loss.  If a saw is used on drywall or joint compound to remove the drywall, and your furnace is turned on, these asbestos articulates now become airborne! And they use the heating vents as highways.  You are now breathing in this dust, and the dust is airborne.  Call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann, the professionals regarding the proper way to take care of your home!

Asbestos & Health

12/4/2018 (Permalink)

MA DEP Asbestos Information

This article can be found at the following link, or is provided for your ease of access.

https://www.mass.gov/guides/massdep-asbestos-construction-demolition-notifications#asbestos-health

Asbestos is a naturally occurring, mostly fibrous mineral that has been used in a variety of building products and industrial settings over the years because of its resistance to heat, fire, and many caustic chemicals.

The physical properties that give asbestos its resistance to heat and decay are also linked with a number of adverse human health effects. Asbestos tends to break apart into a dust of microscopic fibers that remain suspended in the air for a long time. When inhaled, these fibers can cause:

  • Asbestosis, a chronic lung condition that makes breathing progressively more difficult.
  • Cancer, most frequently of the lungs.
  • Mesothelioma, an incurable cancer of the chest and abdominal membranes.

Symptoms can take up to 40 years to develop, all can lead to death, and each exposure increases your risk.

Although seldom used in construction since the late 1980s, building materials that contain asbestos are still legal to sell. They can be found in structures of all ages in various forms: decorative plasters, fireproofing, resilient flooring, heating system insulation, wallboard joint compound systems, mastics, roofing, exterior siding, and more.
