Easy Fire Prevention Tips

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

The Winter Months are the most active months for house fires , so here are a few tips to help lessen the chances for a fire.

  • Wiring and Outlets
    • Electrical cords should be checked throughtout your home for signs of fraying and make sure all frayed wires are replaced.
    • Do not cover cords with items such as rugs or blankets
    • Be aware of the capacity that your home can handle in it's electrical system. If possible have a generator on hand
    • Make sure to understand the difference between surge protectors and power strips. A surge protector helps to protect electronic devices.
  • Kitchen's
    • Make sure there is a fire extinguisher readily available and that everyone knows how to use it.
    • Keep the stove top and oven clean. A build up of grease on the stove or in the oven can lead to a house fire next time it is used if not cleaned properly.
    • Do not leave the stove top unattended - even for a minute.
  • Dryer's
    • Installing a dryer improperly could lead to a house fire when it is used for the first time. Make sure to read the instructions thoroughly to prevent a fire from happening through the vent.
    • Cleaning the dryer's lint filter every time the dryer is used and cleaning the vent itself every three months will help in fire prevention.
  • Chimneys
    • If there is a chimney that is located in your house make sure it is inspected annually and repair as needed. Have a professional chimney sweep clean the chimney annually.
    • Make sure to only burn wood.
  • Other Sources of Heating
    • Space heaters are known for starting house fires when left on for too long, or when nobody is in the house. Always turn off if unattended.
    • Make sure your space heater is far enough away from all furniture or anything else that can catch fire.
